Traditional Scandinavian Oatmeal Porridge

A simple Scandinavian-style oatmeal porridge cooked in one pot, using rolled oats, water, and salt for a clean, nourishing base.

Ingredients

  • 3 dl (1¼ cups) rolled oats
  • 1 liter (4¼ cups) water
  • 3 pinches salt

Instructions

  1. Add the water, rolled oats, and salt to a saucepan.
  2. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring once or twice to prevent sticking.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Remove from the heat and let rest for 1–2 minutes to thicken.
  5. Stir once more and serve warm.

Tips & Variations

  • For a thicker porridge, reduce the water to 8–9 dl (3⅓–3¾ cups).
  • For a thinner porridge, add a small amount of hot water after cooking.
  • Stirring more frequently during the final minutes produces a creamier texture.
